James
1
v.27 “orphans and widows”
The purpose of this statement
by James is to demonstrate that the religion practiced by those in that day and
age was a lie hence is statement of “true and pure religion”. His use of orphans and widows is to show the
people that it is not by self-presentation or supposed humility which God
supposedly wants but the care of those in need. God, Himself in Psalms 68:5 is described as “a defender of widows”. This is what He is searching for in those
who profess to be Christians.
These were the objects of charity and affliction, a typical
example of those in need of help.
Ephesians 2:10 shows that we are His workmanship created = a new
creation = empowered - for good works.
The external acts of worship must be accompanied by sincere faith and
good works as expanded in chapter 2.
